One Year In: Lessons from Running My Home-Based Salon
As I reach my salon’s first anniversary, I’ve been reflecting on what this past year has taught me — not just about hair, but about balance, boundaries, and business ownership.
When I opened my salon, built right onto the front of my home, my goal was to offer fair, consistent pricing and the kind of flexible scheduling that makes life easier for clients. I even imagined offering nearly 24/7 availability!
Reality, however, had some lessons to share.

1. Flexibility Needs Boundaries.
While the idea of round-the-clock appointments sounded wonderful, I’ve learned that my family (and I) need time to recharge. I now limit my availability on evenings and weekends, which has helped me be more present — both at work and at home.
2. Behind-the-Scenes Work Counts, Too.
Bookkeeping, admin tasks, and advertising don’t show up on the appointment book, but they’re essential. I now schedule dedicated “admin hours” each week to stay organized and reduce last-minute stress.
3. Balance Is the Key to Sustainability.
An 8 a.m. appointment followed by an 8 p.m. one might look productive on paper, but it’s not sustainable. I’ve learned to plan my availability in focused time blocks — a rhythm that keeps me energized and consistent for my clients.
4. The Space Evolves with Me.
My salon has grown along with my experience. I’ve discovered what feels right aesthetically and professionally, and I’m thrilled to announce an upcoming update — with new flooring and cabinetry to make the space even more functional and beautiful.
